Mongolia was once the largest empire that mankind had ever known. Mongolia is located in central Asia between Siberia on the north and China on the south. The term Mongol came from the tribe of Genghis Khan, who instaured the biggest empire ever known to mankind. Mongolia had to choose between China and Russia, two powers that share borders with it. The Mongolian government chooses to adopt the communist ideology of Russia. During the 1960s, tension between Russia and china grew, with the soviet attempting to conduct preemptive nuclear strike at Chinese nuclear plants. In 1992, Mongolian President Punsalmaagiin Ochirbat announced that his country would seek to become a one-state Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone (NWFZ).By the end of the cold†¦show more content†¦The author of Mongolia’s Nuclear-Weapon-Free Status: Concept and Practice by T Enkhsaikhan, points out that article 4 of the two treaties signed with Russia and China stressed the importance of keeping Mongolia a zo ne free of nuclear weapons and military influences of its neighbors. The author mentions how Mongolia was a fervent supporter of disarmament in the article. Mongolia is part of the G28 Group, a coalition of nonnuclear developing states, which call nuclear weapons states to dismantle their total arsenals within a period of time. Another important remark is how the author mentions that Mongolia was one of the first to sign and ratify the NPT and the seventh country to ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). The main reason why Mongolia is supporting the disarmament is mostly due to the tension that exists between China and Russia, two neighboring countries with nuclear weapons. By freeing its soil from nuclear armament, no countries should deploy nuclear weapons in its territories. By officially declaring Mongolia NWFZ, Mongolia has a better chance to transform its territory on a front war if Russia and China had to go war. III.
